Summer Cookery School

I’m always keen to get kids cooking from scratch. These habits really do bed in young and if you can cook a decent meal for yourself you are better able to take control of what you eat. You also learn a greater respect for food and where it comes from.

Blah blah.. health..wellbeing…diet…nutrition… nourishment etc…

To cut a very long story short, cooking is great fun and when we cook together we can have a laugh and learn a lot as we go along.

This is exactly what happened in the summer holidays in 2021. I managed to get a bit of funding in place from Huntly Community Council and the Huntly Hairst. I called in a couple of favours from Deveron Projects and the Honesty Bakehouse baker, Kate (thank you all!) and we pulled together a Summer Cookery School. Huntly is very much a food town and I am thankful that local organisations were willing to support me in this idea, and to put their money where the mouth is (literally!)

Over 6 weeks local kids joined in and we cooked from scratch tarts, pastries, bread, cakes, biscuits and we even made butter from scratch using local cream. We foraged for ingredients in the Brander Garden and went back and included these in our food. We had a laugh doing it and every participant (young and old) got to eat some tasty food and learn more about the whole plot to plate concept.

It was great fun and the feedback has been amazing. So many young participants carried on cooking and celebrating the food they eat.

Here’s a wee gallery of the fun we had.
