Strathbogie Seed Collective

and the Huntly Seed Library

We’re sure you have questions, and the first one is probably. “what is a seed library?”

A seed library is a collection of seeds which can be ‘borrowed’ by anyone. Seeds are taken out, grown and then a number of the plants left to go to seed. The seeds are then returned at the end of the growing season to replenish the library, ideally in more abundance than was borrowed. The aim of a seed library is to share and disseminate viable seed, especially local, heirloom and new local varieties that might otherwise be lost. Everything in the seed library can be grown in our environment, with a bit of encouragement and support!

During the 2020 lockdown we shared almost 400 packets of seeds with our community free of charge. This meant that we were all able to grow food and produce for our own tables. There was a huge upsurge in interest in growing for the table and we very much hope that that interest will continue to grow. The pattern has continued since then, and we’ve been able to support families and schools with their growing to help us develop a plot to plate understanding of the food we eat.

The Strathbogie Seed Collective has a focus on seeds for growing food. Whether you have lots of experience or very little, everyone is welcome to join and take part in the library. It is produced by you! This is our blogging space, and we also have a space on facebook.

Our Facebook page is for sharing information on seed saving, knowledge and experiences of growing food, and other relevant skills. We also have a presence at the Farmer’s Market, and people can access the seed library by contacting one of the curators - Dawn Finch and Katrina Flad.

For further information on seed saving, we recommend checking out the Real Seed Catalogue’s information sheet (https://www.realseeds.co.uk/books.html#seedbook).

We are linked to the wonderful One Seed Forward group and you can find out more information about their work by clicking the button below.

The seed library is free to access and we rely on donations to keep going. To make a donation you can buy us a virtual coffee - just state that it’s for the seed library in the notes field. Thank you !
